Paralegals in the Job Market

I am often asked the question by students and graduates as to what skills are required by employers for paralegals.  Of course, it is a question with no one answer, but many answers.  In order to understand what skills are required, one must have:

 1) an understanding of the type of legal environment in which they wish to work

2) the type of law practiced there, and

3) the types of tasks the paralegal might be doing on a day-to-day basis.

  1. I agree this criteria is essential to making the right decision on what type of Paralegal work is desired. Clearly, it took me some time to decide, however, Cerritos College prepared me to work in various fields. The coursework enabled me to work in local government law, defense law, and ultimately, working for the Department of Justice.

I would like to add another important factor in narrowing a choice for paralegal work, networking. Speaking to various paralegals and attorneys gave me a better picture on what I should except entering the field.
